Dining Room Rug Fiasco

I wish that I knew this post was going to end with a solution, but unfortunately, it doesn't. We have hard the darndest time finding an appropriate rug for out dining room.

First there was nothing.

Then we added this textured rug from Overstock. Loved the look, but in person it was a tad lavender. I didn't notice it until my husband mentioned it and them the only thing I could think after that was "Purple"! It shed, which is super annoying under a table, so we Craigslist-ed it.

Then we were super excited about this wool trellis rug.

It looks awesome, graphic and bold, and matches the walls perfectly... Problem? After ordering in June and waiting til August for delivery, RugsUSA sent us the wrong size (an 8x10 instead of a 9x13) and the one we wanted is sold-out forevermore. See how the chair legs hang off the end? It's even worse when we expand the table.

The returns process has been so awful (returning the *wrong* rug), that it's just sitting outside our house waiting for UPS to pick it up. It was delivered in August, so this is just crazytown that I'm still dealing with it.

In the meantime, I ordered another rug. This one from Crate and Barrel. Online it looked grey...in person it looked grey-brown and totally clashed with the walls, ugh. The good news is that CB was super sweet about it, and has already picked the clashing rug up and refunded the money.

Lesson learned, I'm only buying online from stores that have easy return processes!

In the meantime, we have a 9x13 rug pad just waiting to be filled.

I don't want to spend a lot (I like under $500) since my kids will be eating 2-3 meals a day over it!

Any ideas?

Jessica

  1. That is such my story too! Currently I have nothing under the table until I can find something Although it looks a bit bare and unanchored, it's easier to clean the floors without one. And who cares if drinks spill on the floor , i just get out the ole swifter.

  2. I totally sympathize. I've returned 3 rugs purchased online in the past year-all because the color on my screen wasn't true to the color of the rug. How disappointing that the rug you liked wasn't available in the size you ordered-and not even your fault. Let's hope that you get your happy ending soon.

  3. oh wow i am so so sorry!!! rugs are SO hard online- i typically don't order without seeing in store in person because of the color issue.... and i like to see the texture in person. it's a pain in the butt, but safer!

  4. I can relate to your frustration picking a rug is such a hard decision to make because it really is the base for the room. What a shame the black/white pattern is too small ... crazy idea but what about sewing on an extra piece of rug around the edge to make a border? Like in a solid black fabric? If you are having a tough time buying online, Id definately suggest picking out a rug in person you can also get a better deal with them bartering in person. Good luck Im sure you will find the perfect rug when you least expect it :)

  5. Bummer about the trellis rug! I am playing the rug game for a rug for Carson's room. I have had some good luck with purchasing a few rugs online - and it's easier to shop online than dragging two kids to shop for them. I hope you have better luck - your dining room is so pretty!

  6. we bought carpet remnant (from Lowes or Home Depot) for our homeschool room years ago. Carpet remnant runs about $40 for a large size(our was maybe 11X13, and then we cut it down). But that might not be exacltly what you like. Also carpet tiles are a great way to add color, mix and match, and you can replace as needed(for stubburn stain)

  7. What an ordeal! That trellis rug was gorgeous, but not very functional. Good luck with finding the perfect one!

  8. I have a solution! Go to a carpet store. Shop in person. Take a sample (or 57 home). Find one you like, then have it custom cut and bound. They do that :) Good luck!!

  9. What about building a rug out of Flor tiles. Doing this you would be able to easily customize it and if the kids spilled something... no biggie just replace the tile.

  10. Ok, here's a Karah idea that is probably not a Stayathomeista idea but ... what about a 9x13 canvas dropcloth? I could see you painting blue diamonds on it to look similar to the 8x10 rug that you loved but was too small. It could be an inexpensive solution until you find something you just love, love, love!! And then it could transition to the play room or under a craft table.

  11. The trellis rug was perfect. Can you search the manufacturer of the rug to find another online vendor?

  12. I am useless. I have the oldest rugs in the universe that I insisted on keeping because I paid so much for them. They do not go in our cottage. Then, in the living room, I have a very small rug (well, 8 x 10) because the room is so enormously huge that I will need an 11 x 15 or so in order for it to look right. Can I afford that? No. Not if I want to retire before I am a zillion years old. So I will wait and my kids can take care of dealing with rugs after my death.

  13. I'm the same as Kirby. Rug challenged. I don't keep them forever, in fact the opposite, I go through them like, well like you! I *think* I like them so keep them beyond their return time, then decide I don't. So now it's bare under my tables and in my entry.

  14. The dark wooden coffee table adds warmth to the palette of sofa grey... while the large rugs and inviting sofas make the room feel cosy.

  15. No good ideas here, but lots of sympathy! Ordering rugs online is so risky but that's the only place to find good ones! Hope you find The One soon!

  16. I had the same problem for my entranceway at the front door. Ordered 3 from Kohl's none worked. Brought two home from Home Depot; wrong colors. Ordered one online that was not returnable; used it for a year and a half. Hated it. Finally found one online at Kohls that I love. The one that didn't work actually looks pretty good in front of our doorwall.

Go to a carpet store, they can make one for you. And, the blue geometric could be enlarged with a border. It looks so good in that room; you should think about it.

  17. Avoid Pottery Barn rugs if you hate shedding and anyone in your house has allergies. I had migraines for a year and couldn't figure out what the problem was. We finally got rid of our rugs and suddenly I was much better. The offgassing was literally making me sick.

This might sound crazy, but have you checked out Home Depot? We've gotten the last few of our rugs from there and they've held up really well. I think for a 9x12 you'll have to special order, but I believe they deliver to your house.

  18. I'm sorry about your fiasco. What a bummer, that one that was too short was fabulous. Maybe someone else sells a similar pattern. It really is pretty in there. The room will be beautiful when you get this resolved. Hang in there. One day it will all be worth it.

  19. awwww! I do love the graphic rug! What about a Sisal Rug from Ballard? They aren't too expensive. I ordered one recently and was very pleased.

  20. That trellis rug was perfect!!! Go to a carpet store, I know you can find something similar in a wall to wall carpet....they will cut it to the size you want and bind it. They can also add a border before binding. My sister did this for her dining room, she had a round table and wanted an octagonal rug and the carpet store did it for her....give it a try.....

  21. Two thoughts: 1) have a skilled person paint the trellis rug design on your floor and seal it. 2) take the too-small trellis rug (awaiting return) to a carpet store and select a border to be added to it. I've seen some creative and distinctive rugs rehabbed this way. You can think of it as your rug with a compatible mat and frame around it. You might be able to do that for a reasonable fee and get something you love--and that on one else has.

  22. That is too bad that you have had trouble with rugs. I know not to order from Rugs USA now.

  23. Look at the Impression rug at Home Decorators! I got it in 12 x15 and it's really more blue in person. LOVE it! Also.... WHAT is that wall color? http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Impression_Rug/610/

  24. I concur with the vast majority of your recommendations yet there is one that is truly mainstream that you didn't address. I cherish the look of the mat in the room being two thirds of route under bunk with abundance at end of cot. wholesale oriental rugs

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. I love hearing what you have to say! Sometimes I'm busy chasing after the three kids who can walk, or feeding the baby, but I promise, at some point I'll get back to you and head over to your blog (if you have one) to leave you a comment too:)
