Teaching My Values of Money and Giving Back

Not the hard-core, here's-how-much-a-house-costs value, but they more tactile sense of money.




Each of our bigger kids has 2 piggy banks, one for their savings, and the other for charity.

Sometimes, especially with the 3 year old, he gets a little confused by the various coins, so one rainy day, I let them empty their piggy banks and do some money sorting work.


They sorted the money out into small kitchen ramekins,



then decided they wanted to see if the different "monies" would float or sink at varying rates.

Turns out they all sink, but they had a blast, and I got another chance to give them my two cents (sorry, I couldn't help the pun) about the importance of giving.

The cork in there was a leftover from a cork-toothpick-washi-tape boat we made earlier that day.

At this age, the idea of 10% of your income to charity is a bit hard to grasp, but I also don't want them confused by a 50-50 split, which is about as math-y as my 5 year old gets. So I settled on a "more for your piggy bank, but something always goes in the give-away box". So I'll give them each 3 coins, 2 for them, 1 to give away.

Packing a No-waste Lunch

My daughter's school has no-waste lunches every Thursday. That means nothing that goes to school in their lunch should be disposable or thrown into the garbage.

This also translates into a harder lunch-packing day if you are used to relying on pre-packaged snacks or plastic baggies.

I pretty much just adapt my usual kindergarten lunches, putting everything into the amazing Ball Plastic Freezer Jars: sandwiches, fruit, hard-boiled eggs, trail mix as a snack...

If she is successful in her no-waste lunch (which means I did it correctly) she gets a sticker. 5 stickers and you get a prize. 

My daughter acquired those stickers as fast as she could, got her prize, and thankfully is constant reminder to me every Thursday:)
