Succulents by the Mudroom Door

Stay at Home-ista: Mudroom door with vinyl letters and a pot of succulents.

I keep killing any plants I try to get to grow, but I've heard great things about succulents, so I thought to try them out downstairs.

I love how they look,

and I especially love that I'm only supposed to water them occasionally  Which I take to mean "when you remember" :)

I got the kids in on the action, which I'm hoping makes them take ownership over the plants, invest in their safety, and remind me to water them!

Gardening on a Deck

This year, my attempts at gardening are more realistic. Last year, we brought up 2 enormous blue planters and planted bright pink bougainvillea,

blue and orange accents on a deck by stayathomeista.com

built our own DIY planter (for the never-to-bloom veggie garden, this year you can see herbs and flowers),

and overall spruced up our deck.

This year, I just wanted to add some color to the bougainvillea pots (amazingly we didn't kill it over the winter!), and let the kids have a place to "garden" on their own. This year we are testing out a theory I found on Pinterest, that if you put a raw egg in the hole with the flowers, they will grow better!

You can see what happens when I let a 3 year old boy garden here:)

Oh, plus I grabbed a few $2 green pots at Ikea and filled them with this super soft grassy stuff that I picked up at Home Depot. The goal was to keep it alive long enough to use as centerpieces at my daughter's school gala, mission accomplished:)

Anything else you are craving this spring? It feels like each year I downsize my resolutions, and try to focus on what really matters. This spring planting season, that just means I want a few hits of color, and to be able to relax with my family.

Adding a birdhouse to the deck

When we made the big cooler purchase at HomeGoods to brighten up the deck, our son (lover of all things orange) spotted this birdhouse and insisted we buy it.

Here he is filling it with birdseed. I tried to take pictures as he was pouring but I needed both hands to help him. So you get this pic of him carefully putting the spilled seeds in one by one.

All full. We haven't seen any birds use it yet, but if I do, I'll run for the camera!

Training Bougainvillea along a railing

Today, I've finally succumbed to my friend Kerry's house stalking so I'm guest posting on her site, House TalkN today. Stop on by, I might even offer you a glass of wine for your troubles!

training bougainvillea along a railing

Those new bougainvillea plants were just a little too stuck-up for our liking. So one morning my wonderful husband snipped the ties that held the vines to their stakes, and he "trained" them to the sides.

We ordered floral ties off of Amazon and just loosely tied the vines (branches?) to our deck railing.

He wove them in and out of the railings a bit, hoping to buffer them from the wind and anchor them enough to the house that they stay there for more than one season, fingers crossed!

Brunch on the deck

We had the pleasure of having my husband's cousin, his wife, and their 9 month old daughter over for brunch a few weeks ago. The weather has finally turned, so we can fully enjoy our deck. Here are a few additions decor-wise to the space.

orange and blue deck with sofa rug and teak table

Yes, we did get a rug! I'm so excited, the space is really coming together, plus I got a navy tray (from Crate and Barrel) and the orange birdhouse ties in with our new cooler:)

For brunch I made a vegetable frittata, french toast casserole, berries and coffee (of course). Plus we had a bottle of rose to go with it.

I find french toast to be delicious, but making it to order is time consuming and then I'm stuck in the kitchen. To make it as a casserole you just slice up the bread (I used a cinnamon swirl challah loaf from a local bakery), place it in a casserole dish with the traditional dipping ingredients (sugar, cinnamon, milk, eggs), and bake the whole thing at 350 for about 15-20 minutes.

challah french toast casserole

The frittata also required no hands-on time during our get-together. My husband chopped up the vegetables (mushrooms, asparagus, red onions...), I sauteed them in olive oil in an oven-proof skillet, then poured in the eggs (8), let the bottom set up a bit, maybe 3 minutes, then put the whole thing in the 350 degree oven for 10 minutes til it was cooked through. You can also add cheese and herbs if you'd like. We didn't have any, but I'm a big fan of goat cheese in frittatas, and maybe a little chervil, parsley, chives...

Side note- my 4.5 year old can crack eggs!

And when it gets too hot, my kids change into their swim suits and stand *in* the water table with the hose:)

Oogie-Bougie: Flowers on the Deck

Congratulations to Candice M. you were the winner of last week's giveaway!

Oogie-bougie, since we planted bougainvillea. Get it?

No?

That's OK, my dad appreciates the reference.

Ever since a brief stop at a HomeGoods on our way back from Lake Tahoe (trip pics here), I've had a color scheme in mind for our deck. Let me step aside for a moment to say that my husband, who only skims this blog so it's totally ok for me to talk about him, was skeptical that the "new" HomeGoods would have different items than our local store. Surprise! The minute we walked in and saw this baby, he was sold.

Ok, so orange is a popular color in our family, since our son loves it. You might have seen his new train decal or nightstand? Other than in his room we have *no* orange in the house, so I decided to bring some navy outside to tie the deck in with our existing indoor furnishings, and I love how the two colors look together.

I also picked up a welcome sign from Target's dollar aisle to carry the color scheme over to our DIY patio garden.

Two trips to Home Depot later (they have a one year guarantee on plants, so if these don't make it, we can get a refund), and we were set. I did cave in and get orange-ish bougainvillea for two pots...

The first trip, for those who care, was for the bougainvillea. We accidentally over-purchased, so when we returned 2 "trees" the next day, we snapped up some impatiens for the around the base.

This is my very first foray into gardening, so I took the advice of a fellow Northern California blogger (Kate from Centsational Girl) and purchased the Sunset Western Gardens book. I promptly forgot to cross-check anything in the book, but I do feel like at least I have access to more information now:)

A DIY Patio Garden

We have an expansive deck off of our main floor, but there was something missing, something green. I've been toying with the idea of a small vegetable or herb garden, but our natural soil here is solid rock, so growing anything in it is chancy at best. I could build a raised bed, but we have the benefit of living in the hills where deer and wild turkeys (no kidding I *just* saw one in my backyard) roam freely, and I've already seen what happens when I inadvertently planted some "deer candy" in our yard. Gone. Vamooshed (is that even a word?) Like the plant never existed.

diy patio garden

Surfing Pinterest one evening (oh, how I love you), I happened upon a kit to make a raised bed on a patio from Scout Regalia. A few clicks later and it was winging it's way to me through the magic of UPS.

This is the moment where I express incredible gratitude to my husband for being so handy. In graduate school (we both studied architecture) he was even a shop assistant, working a few hours a week in the woodshop in the basement of the building, helping other students to use power tools to build models of buildings. Anyhow, we don't have a complete shop set-up, but we have a pretty handy assortment of power tools, and he is oh-so-inventive, so we set up a makeshift sawhorse from the bags of soil and we were good to go.

We bought two 8' 2x6 boards, then cut them each down, giving us four long sides and four short sides for our rectangular bed.

Yep, that is totally the corner where our water table used to be. We will have to find a new spot for it come summer. Somewhere around this time the sky started to darken and it looked like this.

So, working quickly, we put down the special membrane that came in the kit (I bought an extra one too since we were making a larger bed that 30x40 which is the size of one membrane). In retrospect, we probably could have made this work with off-the-Home-Depot-shelf brackets and a shower curtain with holes in it, but since this is my first venture into gardening, I wanted something with a little bit more of a safety net. Although, if I really wanted a safety net, I probably should have read the directions, instead of just going with gut instinct:)

So, after we screwed the brackets into the sides (the deck is sloped for water drainage, so so we had to rest the corner on our tape measure to make it level), we put it in place and plopped the membrane in. Update: Read the instructions! You need to staple the filter fabric to the boards so the dirt doesn't spill out. I learned that the hard way.

building a raised bed garden

At this point our daughter, son and their friend decided to "help" put the soil in. Look how sunny it appears, as if we have all the time in the world...

dirt in a raised bed patio garden

We laid out the plants on top of the soil to get a sense of placement before actually digging them holes.  We chose (clockwise from top right) 4 tomato plants (which will eventually need cages or strings), 6 strawberry plants, 2 basil, 2 zucchini, 2 cucumber, and 2 artichokes. Slightly odd assortment, but it's all things that our kids will actually eat if they bear fruit (or veggies as the case may be).

plant layout in diy patio garden

Following the directions on the plants, we soaked each of them, dug a hole, tore off the bottom of the compostable container, place the scraps in the hole, planted the plant, then refilled the hole.

Our finished product:

Then this happened:

Needless to say, we didn't need what I'm about to show you.

We got the kids watering cans, gloves and tools. Because it's just too cute, and Target is my friend/enabler.

The Deck and THE VIEW

After enough mentions of the view from my kitchen corner post (here) I decided to just let it all hang out. So without further ado, here is where we hang out when the weather is nice, and the killer view that we are incredibly grateful for.

What's that? A water table? Yes, yes it is. I'm sure it will be making more than one appearance here come summer. When it's in use, we pull it closer to the hose reel so the kids can fill it up themselves and have some nice water-play action happening in the semi-shade of the trellis. As a side note- I read in Real Simple about this hose reel, and it truly is the best one. It swings away from the wall and you can wind it back up, then fold it back against the house. We have three and they rock.

Best details? The copper flashing-turned-cap that is nicely patinad (see the green oxidation starting?) and really warms up the space. We had toyed with wood to cap off our deck walls, but they are so deep that we would have to join and mill a special piece, which would not be the best idea for waterproofing. The cedar shingles are fire-treated (a must-do here) and the railing is a clear cedar.

Now here is the trifecta for comfortable deck enjoyment: lighting, heat, and speakers. We have wall sconces and down lights in the trellis to light the space at night, an awesome electric heater than keeps us warm on autumn nights, and waterproof speakers tied into our stereo system (here ) so we can enjoy music outside. Or football. We haven't actually used the speakers for music yet, just for listening to the Superbowl (link) when we had a party and the weather was nice (don't hate me) so we barbecued outside.
