Great Summer Reading (An Alternate to Fifty Shades of Grey)

I'll admit it, I read the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.

All three books in 5 days. What can I say? Once I started I was both so repulsed and disturbed and sucked in all at the same time that I felt I had to finish.

If you are related to me, do not read these books. If for nothing else than that I can't have you know the type of smutty images that I now have in my mind. Not really what I want, totally not my style,

I do love a good romance novel, a nice escape from reality, predicatable enough to not give me nightmares, and easy enough that I'm in and out (pardon the expression) in a day or two.

So if you are looking for an alternative to this:

Might I suggest a few altermatives?

I'm a sucker for historical romances, you can even find my pre-Kindle collection of paperbacks spine-side in on my kitchen mantle.

See?

Thankfully, the Kindle was invented so now you don't have to know what I'm reading. It might be something of quality like East of Eden:

Or some modern chick lit like Seating Arrangements:

Or a summer blockbuster novel like The Age of Miracles: A Novel:

Although, now that my Kindle is chipped, I might have to get a new one. It was the original version, introduced on Oprah (remember that?). At this point it looks like an industrial design relic.

This summer I've been having the best luck with Georgette Heyer. She wrote historical romances set in regency England (my personal favorite period), but she wrote in the 1930's so the books are just as fun, romantic, mysterious and engrossing, but they end with a simple kiss. Nice and chaste while giving me all the plot that I like. Here are my two favorites, The Grand Sophy and Frederica.

This list contains affiliate links. As always, I actually own all of these, so I feel good about sending you over to Amazon to buy them:)

Make sure to stop by yesterday's post about how to paint a nightstand and stencil the tabletop for your chance to win a stencil up to $50 value.

What are you reading this summer?

I just bought the new Nicholas Sparks one. I am cracking up at your description about 50 Shades. So funny!

Ha ha -- I just refuse to read the 50 Shades books. Simply refuse. :) I'm reading The Girl Who Played With Fire right now and it's awesome! I recently finished Wendy Wax's Ocean Beach which is a great chick lit read.
Fun post, Jessica!

Yes 50 Shades of Grey...it was my vacation read. I had the third book with me by the pool and my mother in law asked me if they were good becasue she was thinking of reading them and I thought oh my please do not read them or tell me that you did! I do not think my mom knows anything about the books so that is a good thing:)

I couldn't even finish the first one. Not because of the content, because I like me some steam, but because of the terrible, terrible, oh so terrible writing! I never leave books unfinished, but I just couldn't do it any more.

I'm reading the second installment of the Discovery of Witches books. They're amazing!!

Your reading tastes run the gamut from smut to chaste kisses! My kind of gal! (although I haven't read Shades of Grey -- yet)!

I haven't done 50 Shades of Grey yet, just too many other books on my list right now and not sure it's worth all the hype.

I rarely do romance novels, but I do love Catherine Coulter's historical romance novels!

Hi! Well I will admit I read '50 Shades of Grey' and was happy when it was over. The writing is so poor and the story was an eye roller. Now on to the good stuff. I made a New Years Resolution to read more and I have made good on this, averaging about three books a month. My favorites so far have been, 'Unbroken', 'Maine', 'Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes', 'The Paris Wife' 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children', and 'Secret Daughter'. 'The Paris Wife' inspired me to read up on F. Scott Fitzgerald's life in Paris and I ended up reading 'Great Gatsby' again and fell in love all over again. Not looking forward to the movie adaptation of that though. Just not a Baz Luhrman fan unless he uses Ewan McGregor in the movie, then I will watch it. :)

Too funny! I did not read 50 Shades and took great abuse from my pals. I would much rather read your list!
Thanks for the giggle!

Thanks for the suggestions! I need a new beach read. I'm about 1/3 way into the 2nd Fifty Shades book and I'm actually bored to tears. Even the smut isn't exciting anymore and the story is moving along so slowly. But everyone keeps telling me to finish so I am trying!

I chose not to read Fifty Shades of Grey after finding out what it is about. Recently I finished up the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo series and loved it. I am a sucker for legal/crime books. Which probably explains my love for John Grisham books.
Earlier this summer I read Reshaping it all by Candace Cameron Burre. An excellent book on eating healthy and glorifying God with your diet and body.
Right now I am reading The Connected Child as part of our adoption home study and Twelve Extraordinary Women of the Bible for fun.
I love reading and finding out what books other's have loved. I haven't given in to the Kindle because nothing beats holding a book in my hands.

This is the second post today I've read about this book. I prefer a good who-dun-it in true crime, but if I keep seeing this I'm gonna have to find out for myself and apparently maybe I don't want to??

i havent read 50 shades and at this point dont plan to. i dont have a problem with the subject matter, it doesnt offend me, however the reviews arent great so thats putting me off.
i'd love to see the titles on your mantle - i love historical romances as well, especially those set in the old west.
i've just finished a book called Band of Gold, set in Australia, which i enjoyed, and prior to that read Widow of the South, which i loved, and now want to go to Tennesee to visit the house at the center of the story.

Book club was reading 50 shades, and I bought the first one and never finished. I was am with Amy on this one, BORING, TOTAL WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!! We are currently reading Behind the Beautiful Forevers, good thus far. For a sweet romance I love LuAnn Rice books. Most take place on coastal towns and are sweet love stories with family intertwined. Thanks for the suggestions!!

Great post! I felt the same way about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, etc but once you start, you just can't stop! I finished East of Eden this summer and LOVED it. I feel like I need to educate myself on what it means because it was so deep.

I loved Edgar Sawtelle and really recommend it - great suspense, beautiful descriptions, and memorable (though heart-wrenching) ending.

Hi! I'm loving my Kindle also! Yesterday I gave a whole bunch of books that I've read to the American Kidney Foundation. I cleaned out 7 - yes! SEVEN! - of my book case shelves! I love to read & I used to hate it when I ran out of books but now I can easily download a new one. I was so excited to find out that you can get free books for your Kindle at Amazon & thru Pixel of Ink @ http://www.pixelofink.com/ & Pixel will send you a daily deal email for fiction, non-fiction and even kids books that include discounted prices and free books too! My grandson loves me to read from my Kindle with him at nap time because he loves to push the button to turn the page!

When my husband and I moved to Carmel, CA we were like 'why are so many things named Steinbeck?'

Yeah, we're not the smartest people in the world. :)

You have inspired me to finish the books I have begun and maybe even throw a couple classics in too.

Hugs, Tanya :)

I enjoy the Georgette Heyer novels too. Glad to hear someone else reads them. The ones at my library always look like no one has ever touched them. I've read the two you mentioned as well as a number of others. Sometimes I keep the computer handy to look up the odd, old English phrases they use. After a while you get the hang of the dialect and you may even find yourself wanting to speak like they do once you are finished with the book. The characters have a certain grace and decorum to their culture that I find fascinating. Have fun with your continued reading!

Your little blurb about 50 Shades had me laughing out loud! I haven't read it but my girlfriends who are readers weren't impressed. I've read some good reviews of Seating Arrangements. If you like historical novels, check out my book nerd post because I've read three good ones this summer.

PS Can you tell me about the art above the mantel? It looks really cool.

Enjoyed reading your reviews! Do you link up to any party that does book reviews? I am looking for a common (not highbrow) party like that. Thanks,
